Phase 1: The Essential Search Net (Family & Matches)

These sites have the largest databases. Uploading here is like casting a wider net to find cousins, siblings, or parents who didn't test on Ancestry.

GEDmatch

Purpose: The "Gold Standard" for truth-seekers. It connects people from all different testing companies (Ancestry, 23andMe, etc.) in one place.

How to Upload:

Go to GEDmatch.com and register for a free account.

On the home dashboard, look for the Upload your DNA files section on the right.

Click "Generic Uploads."

Fill in the name and details. Select your privacy settings (Public/Private).

Click Browse and select your unopened zip file.

Click Upload. Wait for the numbers to finish scrolling (it processes one chromosome at a time) until it says "Finish."

FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA)

Purpose: Excellent for finding international matches and very popular for serious genealogists.

Fill out the "Get Started" form (Name/Email/Sex).

On the next screen, click Upload Now and select your zip file.

It’s free to see your matches. (There is a small $19 optional fee later if they want to unlock the chromosome browser tools).

MyHeritage DNA

Purpose: The best site for European connections and very user-friendly "AutoClustering" (grouping matches into family branches).

How to Upload:

Go to MyHeritage.com/dna/upload

Click Start. Create a free account or sign in.

Follow the prompts to Upload DNA Data.

Check the boxes for consent and select your zip file.

Phase 2: Deep Roots & Ancient Signatures

These sites are where you go for the "Calculators" like the MDLP World-22 you used.

Genomelink

Purpose: Great for "Deep Ancestry" and specific Indigenous American breakdowns.

How to Upload:

Go to Genomelink.io

Click Sign Up and select Upload My DNA Data.

Drop your zip file into the box. It will give you a few "traits" for free and a basic ancestry breakdown.

Living DNA

Purpose: Highly detailed for British Isles ancestry and 80+ world regions.

How to Upload:

Go to LivingDNA.com/free-dna-upload

Create an account and click Upload DNA.

Enter the tester's details and select the file. Results usually take 48 hours.

The Golden Rule for the User

"Do NOT unzip the file."

"The computer needs the zip file exactly as it came from Ancestry. If you open it, you break the seal, and the other sites won't be able to read the truth inside."

Essential DNA Upload Sites

FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA):** One of the oldest databases. They allow free uploads for "Autosomal" data (the kind you get from Ancestry). It is particularly useful because it has a large international user base and specific tools for matching.

MyHeritage DNA:** Very strong for finding biological family, especially if there is any European heritage. They have an excellent "Chromosome Browser" and "AutoClusters" tool, which visually groups matches into families.

Living DNA:** Based in the UK, this site is excellent for a more granular breakdown of British Isles and European ancestry. It’s a good additional net to cast for matches.

Promethease:** This is different from the others. It doesn’t find family matches; instead, it uses the raw data to provide a comprehensive health and trait report based on scientific literature (SNPedia).

 Specialized Tools for Analysis

Once the raw data is uploaded, these tools help "connect the dots" between the matches:

DNA Painter Allows users to "map" specific segments of their chromosomes to ancestors. It's a visual way to see exactly which piece of DNA came from which lineage.

Genetic Affairs Provides automated clustering (similar to MyHeritage) that can help organize hundreds of matches into distinct family trees.

WATO (What Are The Odds?) A tool on DNA Painter where you can plug in cM (centimorgan) amounts for multiple matches to predict where a "stolen" or unknown individual fits into a specific tree.

When the Matches Fail You: How to Go Back, to Go Forward

If your closest DNA matches are missing, make no sense, or lead nowhere you are not out of options. You have not hit a wall. You have just been looking in the wrong direction.

Go back further.

Ancient ancestry cannot be sealed. It cannot be shredded. It was written into your chromosomes before any institution existed to erase it. And it will lead you home.

Step One: Find Your Ancient Anchors

Upload your raw DNA data to GEDmatch. Run the MDLP World-22 admixture tool and examine your results by chromosome — not just the overall percentage summary. You are looking for population markers that connect you to documented ancient groups. These are your anchors.

Step Two: Separate the Lines

Each chromosome carries contributions from both parents but the patterns are distinct. By analyzing which chromosomes carry which population markers, you can begin to separate which ancestry belongs to which parental line. This is how you identify two separate stories inside one set of results.

In my case, one line carried markers connecting to Indigenous North American populations confirmed through shared segments with documented ancient remains on record in GEDmatch. The other line carried entirely different markers tracing to distinct European origins, confirmed through two separate historical lineages that converged through marriage.

Two completely different ancestries. Clearly separated by chromosome analysis.

Step Three: Trace the Migration Forward

Once you have identified your ancient population groups, research where those populations migrated over time. Follow the geographic trail forward through history — where did that population settle, move, and eventually concentrate in North America?

Do this for each parental line separately.

Step Four: Look for Convergence

When you trace two separate lines forward through migration and they converge in the same region — the same state, the same county — that convergence is not coincidence. That is your biological origin point.

Both of my lines traced independently to the same county in Washington State. That convergence confirmed what no paper record could tell me.

What This Means for You

You do not need a close match. You do not need a paper trail. You need your raw data, patience, and the willingness to go back further than anyone expected you to look.

The system that erased you counted on you searching forward. Go back. The truth has been there the whole time.
